Karen Read was back in court Wednesday amid accusations that she killed her boyfriend, who was also a Boston Police officer. As court proceedings continued in the case, Read’s lawyers went head to head with prosecutors, arguing about whether their client hit officer John O’Keefe with her car on the night he died. Read, of Mansfield, has been charged with charges including second-degree murder. She has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors maintain Read and O’Keefe had been out drinking with friends, including another police officer, on the night O’Keefe died.O’Keefe’s body was later found in a snowbank outside the other officer’s home in Canton hours after Read dropped him off. Read, who is accused of backing her SUV into O’Keefe, has claimed she is innocent for more than a year. The courtroom in Dedham where Read appeared on Wednesday was packed as Read’s defense argued she has been framed. The prosecution responded, saying Read’s defense team is on a fishing exp...

Lowell man speaks out after wrongful conviction settlement with city of Lowell

A Lowell man spoke out this week after his attorneys said he secured one of the largest wrongful conviction settlements in New England history from the city of Lowell. Victor Rosario’s attorneys issued a statement on the matter on Tuesday, roughly 40 years after he was convicted of arson and murder, which he did not commit. Rosario spoke with reporters on Wednesday, at one point holding a photo of himself from 1983 on the day of his conviction. Rosario’s attorneys said the city of Lowell will pay $13 million dollars in its settlement with Rosario. “This 13 million dollars does not begin to compensate Victor for all that he has lost,” said attorney Locke Bowman. “But it reflects the acknowledgement of the city of Lowell that what happened wasn’t right.”Rosario said he was on scene trying to help victims of a fatal apartment fire on Decatur Street in Lowell back in 1982. Investigators later ruled the fire an arson and decided Rosario was the villain, rather th...

It was a gutsy call — a decision Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau stands by as his team travels to Miami for Games 3 and 4 of their second-round playoff against the Heat.It doesn’t matter how hot a player is offensively. If he’s hurting the group on the other end of the ball, Thibodeau will have a quick hook.It happened in the fourth quarter of the Knicks’ five-point, series-tying victory over the Heat in Game 2 at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday.Forward RJ Barrett was on a heater from downtown, hitting four of his first six threes on the night and finishing on a five-of-nine clip from downtown. But as Barrett struggled to get stops defensively in the fourth quarter, often letting Miami’s Gabe Vincent get shots off at will, Thibodeau made the decision to bench his fourth-year wing in favor of defense: He brought starter Josh Hart back into the game to close the quarter and rode defensive-minded wing Quentin Grimes for the remainder of regulation....

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Lawmakers began voting Wednesday on a Republican package of abortion restrictions that would tighten North Carolina’s ban on the procedure from after 20 weeks to 12 weeks while creating new exceptions but also more requirements for pregnant women and physicians. The legislation, which emerged the previous day after months of private negotiations among House and Senate GOP members, was on a fast track to reach the desk of Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper, likely this week. The full House was expected to vote on the measure later Wednesday after a committee recommended the measure, and a Senate vote was expected Thursday. More than 200 people, including Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein and members of Congress, rallied in opposition to the bill near the Legislative Building. Cooper, a strong abortion-rights supporter, vowed to fight the measure.“I will veto this extreme ban and need everyone’s help to hold it,” Cooper said in a tweet. But Republicans now hold ...

Galactic gobble: Star swallows planet in one big gulp

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — For the first time, scientists have caught a star in the act of swallowing a planet — not just a nibble or bite, but one big gulp. Astronomers on Wednesday reported their observations of what appeared to be a gas giant around the size of Jupiter or bigger being eaten by its star. The sun-like star had been puffing up with old age for eons and finally got so big that it engulfed the close-orbiting planet. It’s a gloomy preview of what will happen to Earth when our sun morphs into a red giant and gobbles the four inner planets. “If it’s any consolation, this will happen in about 5 billion years,” said co-author Morgan MacLeod of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. This galactic feast happened between 10,000 and 15,000 years ago near the Aquila constellation when the star was around 10 billion years old. As the planet went down the stellar hatch, there was a swift hot outburst of light, followed by a long-lasting stream of dust shining brightly i...
