Boston Fire Commissioner Paul Burke issued a statement Sunday thanking the department’s agency partners who assisted when a man allegedly opened fire as crews were responding to a blaze at a building in Mattapan. In a statement posted to the department’s X account, Commissioner Paul F. Burke wrote, “I am grateful that the fire and active shooter incident yesterday did not result in any injury to our firefighters, police officers or residents. As firefighters, our main focus at any fire is the rescue of residents and the extinguishment of the fire but this incident heightened the danger level for all of our first responders. The multi-agency cooperation was a role model of how a coordinated response should work and undoubtedly saved lives. Thank you to all of the Boston firefighters for their professionalism at yesterday’s incident and thank you to the responding Boston Police officers for protecting our firefighters at a very dangerous scene.” The m...After more than 40 years, Improv Boston closing down

An end of an era — after more than 40 years of providing laughs to audiences in Cambridge, Improv Boston is ending its run and the group is talking about the difficult decision.“It’s hard, from my perspective, to be on the side of winding down a 40-year legacy,” said Improv Boston’s Managing Director Matt Laidlaw, who noted bringing audiences back after the pandemic proved difficult.“We just could never replicate what we needed from an audience-attending-shows perspective,” he said. The group says it hopes to find investors to revive the performances in the future. For the time being, they’re encouraging area residents to support local arts. The National Touring Company for Improv Boston will have a final performance on Jan. 26 at the Rockwell in Somerville.Week 17 recap: Chicago Bears blow out the Atlanta Falcons 37-17 behind big days from Justin Fields, DJ Moore and Khalil Herbert

If quarterback Justin Fields is making his closing statement for his case to stay with the Chicago Bears over the last two weeks of the season, he got off to a pretty good start Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons at Soldier Field. On a blustery day on the lakefront, Fields threw for 268 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 45 yards and another score to fuel a 37-17 victory, the Bears’ fifth straight at home.It was a solid day for Fields as the Bears (7-9) consider what to do with the No. 1 draft pick they officially secured with the Carolina Panthers’ loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Bears general manager Ryan Poles obtained that pick with his trade of the No. 1 pick last year. With tight end Colet Kmet sitting out most of the game with a knee injury and wide receiver Darnell Mooney out with a concussion, Fields went to wide receiver DJ Moore early and often.Moore had nine catches for 159 yards and a touchdown. The Bruins and Detroit Red Wings are now done with their season series. But if the two teams should happen to meet come April, it should make for some great entertainment. The B’s earned a split in the series at 2-2 with a hard-earned 5-3 victory a Little Caesars Arena on Sunday, fighting through a quick turnaround, some playoff-like nastiness and some controversy that went against them.Trent Frederic scored twice and Charlie Coyle put the B’s ahead for good with the third period go-ahead goal, pushing their win streak to three games. After the B’s coughed up a two-goal lead in the second period, they regained it 2:52 into the third on a set play off an offensive zone faceoff. Coyle won the draw back to Brad Marchand, who dished it to an oncoming Charlie McAvoy. The defenseman took it deep before feeding it back to Coyle, who ripped a one-timer home from the slot. The B’s killed off McAvoy penalty and played some stout defense down the stretch before Jake DeBrus...Las Vegas Countdown to 2024: The biggest party of the year starts now

Initially, there was concern from the Vikings that rookie receiver Jordan Addison might not be able to suit up against the Green Bay Packers on New Year’s Eve. He suffered an ankle injury last weekend in a 30-24 loss to the Detroit Lions on Christmas Eve and was a limited participant in practice this week.In the end, Addison progressed enough to be active in the primetime game at U.S. Bank Stadium, perhaps knowing the Vikings needed a win to keep their playoffs hopes alive. Not only did his presence provide the offense with another weapon for rookie quarterback Jaren Hall, it also opened up other areas of the field for star receiver Justin Jefferson. It’s been a solid campaign for Addison since the Vikings selected him with the No. 23 pick in the draft. He impressed from the onset in training camp, carving out a niche for himself in the offense, and piling up 63 catches for 826 yards and nine touchdowns heading into the game between the Vikings and Packers.Asked earlier t...Broncos report card: A quality defensive outing propels Denver to home win over Chargers on New Year’s Eve

Offense — CThe Broncos offense in many ways looked similar to the work Russell Wilson did over the season’s first 15 games. Head coach Sean Payton had to burn a timeout on the third paly of the game. The Broncos struggled in goal-to-go situations and the well went dry for the entirety of the third quarter. At the same time, though, Denver ran the ball effectively and Stidham found something of a rhythm after a slow start. He threw for 165 yards in the first half and 224 overall. He didn’t wow, but he also didn’t turn the ball over. This one’s not going in the hall of fame by any stretch after 313 yards of offense (4.7 per play) and the team’s lowest scoring output since Week 6, but the Broncos controlled most of the game and did enough to get the job done.Defense — A-The Broncos defense shut down the Chargers’ makeshift offense from the start. They allowed just a trio of field goals on the afternoon and held quarterback Easton Stick and company to 2 of 11 on ...Latest news
